Forensic Art is the use of artistic media to create visual images in matters of law.  The most commonly known forensic art is composite drawing.  A trained composite artist will conduct a cognitive interview with a vitim or witness in order to obtain a detailed physical description.  The artist employs reference photographs to illustrate each individual feature.  The features are rendered and combined into a composite sketch.  When the subject's memory and the sketch are in agreement, the sketch can then be distributed as an investigative tool to generate leads.

2D Forensic Reconstruction

2-Dimensional reconstruction of unidentified skeletal remains is accomplished by examination of the bones by a forensic anthropologist.  The artist then collaborates with the anthropologist to identify features of the skull.  Appropriate tissue depth markers are applied indicating sex, race and stature.  The skull is then photographed in the Frankford Horizontal to approximate a life-like head position.  The photos are enlarged to life size.

The artist then renders the features on an overlay of the skull.  The contours and features of the skull and depth markers serve as a guide for feature characteristics, size, proportion and relationship.  This method has proven successfull when all other means of identification have failed.
